The past two weeks have been really exciting for me - I was commissioned by Nespresso through Connexia to do a coffee cup stain portrait of the beloved Italian singer Lucio Dalla on site in Milan. Lucio passed away in March this year while on concert in Switzerland and his funeral was attended by 50,000 people. The portrait was presented at an invite-only event a few days ago at the new Nespresso boutique in Bologna, right below Lucio's studio and apartment. Popular Italian singer Cesare Cremonini was there, too. Like Lucio, Cesare was born and raised in Bologna, and I'm told that he was very loved by Lucio.
This project was a really meaningful one because I met many people who knew Lucio - some have even worked for him for 20+ years. All of them who knew him told me that same thing: that though everyone regarded him as a genius, he was still a very humble, easy-going, genuine person. Some even had tears in their eyes. They told me in this portrait, it was his eyes that really spoke to them - they said he always had 'that look'. They also mentioned that he was an avid art fan and collector, and would have appreciated this piece. :)
I can't express how honoured I am to be a part of this, to be able to work on a portrait of someone who is so loved and respected by the people of Italy. And I can't begin to express how thankful I am for God for this crazy experience.
The piece will be displayed in the boutique the next few days, then given to the mayor of Bologna, who, I heard, plans to hang it in a museum that they will be building for Lucio.
