The final push...and I made it!

{so after months and YEARS of slaving behind computer lab doors (that's my friend Aileen btw)...}
{...note the coke and kfc. we're all stress-eaters. that's why we're rounder towards the end of semester}

{...and sleeping on studio room floors at 4am in the morning...}
{...honestly, no one cares about hygiene and germs when their design project gets in the way}

{...after weeks and weeks of getting high from glue-sniffing and cutting ourselves early in the morning (accidentally, of course)}

{...I present to you, my final, FINAL project in uni, EVER!}

{The project: an artist studio/gallery space within an existing building that can contain 100 artists, with emphasis on using recyclable/reusable materials}

{existing condition of chosen building in the CBD}

{proposed design of new building, with timber structure weaving throughout building, indicating routes for the public to take throughout building; remainder of the building are private artists' spaces.}

{private artist corridor, with recycled cardboard as a fit-out feature, and note the exposed ceiling to show the history of the previous building}

{recycled cardboard installation for artists - storage, seating, causeway and partition, all in one!}

{I was quite happy with the outcome of this project, and satisfied with it being my final work in my 6 years of architecture. Here's a shot of me with my panels and model, taken at my graduation exhibition up in Little Collins Street. Thank you for all those who came by, and the encouragement you gave me. It was so reassuring to have my tutor and ex-tutor come up to me, giving me a pat on my back and telling me that they liked what they saw. That was all I needed to make me go, 'yay...all that hard work was all worth it!'}

{...and my final elective EVER was a rather fun but challenging one. We were to pick up Grasshopper, a parametric tool, to design a parametric installation and gallery space... oh, and the laser cutter is the coolest machine of the year!}

{computer rendered model. The task was to create a gallery space which walls, ceilings and light modulator would be updated each time the installation was re-positioned. So in this example, the holes of the light modulator are at its largest in the centre, so that more light can be highlighted on the suspended installation}}

{final model!}

{this monster took a whole week to build and almost left me in tears! Holding all those black thread in tension was probably the hardest part of the construction process...when a bunch of thread were perfectly tied up towards one direction, the others would flop - it was so so so frustrating, but thank God it all held up in the end. 3 rolls of sticky tape and one tube of glue was used in this whole process...as well as laser-cutting/material fees which cost about the same amount you'd pay to have dinner at a fine-dining restaurant :( . I am so broke.}

{updated my online portfolio...more work can be viewed at hongyi.carbonmade.com}

It's such a good feeling to just bum around and not do anything these few weeks...I'm gonna really savour this short moment before I get a full-time job. I've got a couple of tutoring sessions lined up, where I'll be tutoring graphic software (adobe photoshop, illustrator, indesign) one-on-one...if you're interested, do drop me an email! Oh, and also, after months of thinking through this, I've decided to push through my self-doubt and shyness and will be posting a couple of videos on youtube within the next few months...won't reveal too much about what it will be about, but I'm really excited about it and am looking forward to seeing where that will lead to.

More posts to come!

ps: a friend posted this photo of some archi students dozing off in their studio room...ohh the pains of being an archi student...if only you knew what we have to go through each semester...my mum had a glimpse of it while I was in Holland, and that really scared her off. Bottom line: pay your architects better in the future!

Oh I'm so glad I'm done with unhealthy sleeping and diet patterns for the rest.of.my.life! My six-year long prison sentence is finally overrrrrrr!

  2. i love the final model! really artsy n cool, so impressive! but the art gallery looks kind of cramped. looks very dutch kind of gallery :D i prefer the sparse, minimalist zaha MAXXI type of museum. or shd an art gallery be diff from an art museum? i guess there was space constraint. but anyhow, you did excellent and worked so hard n now you are FREEEE! i'll have you totally, no schedule, no running here n there, no sleeping at odd hours, when i am there!

  7. Wow!! What a nice projects, models, renderings!!!
    You're really really clever!!!
    I would like to be as good as you in rendering...when I studied at university, my teachers didn't want us to use pc...so we have to draw all by hands!!! It was a really hard job, and it didn't look so nice as drawings made with a pc!! I made only my thesis on pc, and I liked it so much...but, of course, I didn't have so much experience in it, so I couldn't do so beautiful renderings!!! Now, at work, I use a pc, but the most things I do is only drawing on Autocad...not so artistic.. :-(
    I would have liked to be born some years later....
    Enjoy your free life now!!!
    Many many compliments!!!

  9. Hey Red! ^^
    I'm really happy for you, this is just my first year (archi!) but we can easily see that you did an awesome work (and very clean!), you are soooo talented and so inspiring and stuff... I kept coming to this website every single day, looking for some update, to know what happened, and now i'm really relieved!
    Now something else is you've inspired me to begin some blog like yours (archi/art/friends :p) especially that in archi studies there are a lot of activities...well you know! =)
    I hope you don't mind!! ;)
    Sorry for english mistakes, it's only my 3rd language =)
    I'd like to ask you for some specific tips now that you have some free time but please let me know when you're really free and not tired anymore.
    I (l) you!

  11. anon: haha dont worry - I didn't really understand the brief until I was a week away from submission...and it's a very new area in digital archi that we're experimenting with.

    mama: thank u mummy, looking forward to u being here...it'll be like back in europe, minus all that walking and hopefully no more starving ourselves. couldn't do a maxxi-like building for mine because tutor was more for reusing old existing buildings, so it really was a struggle for many of us because for our final thesis project, we'd like a shock-n-awe, super cool, budget-blowing project. and guess what, my external crits were asking me whether i blew my budget for this building! i was so irritated. clearly this was a low-budget studio.

    karolina: thank u and happy holidays to u!

    manda: thank u my dear! u did great too - so glad the worst is over! Now, I'm just hoping there are no last minute surprises with my transcripts...

    naijiao: thank u! going back to kk?

    laura: thank u for ur kind words - you are always so nice! and you're still in your bachelors right...? u can still pick up computer programs! I only really learned photoshop in 3rd year, and rhinoceros/3dmax in 5th year...it takes a lot of discipline to sit down and teach yourself though. Easiest way is to get a friend to teach, or do online tutorials! But I have to say, when I was in Europe, I noticed most universities did not stress on computer renderings - it was more about physical modelling & hand-drawing * autocad skills...r u done with ur semester yet?

    khai: hahaha boleh boleh...!

    Fatine: Hello! Thank you sooo much for your comments - both this one and the one before! I was really encouraged. How are you enjoying your first year of archi? Please email me at redhongyi@gmail.com, I'd be more than happy to chat with you about archi-related stuff!
    ps: so cool to get to know someone from morocco!

    vanchaaa: thank u! and u will!

  12. Hi Yi!
    Well...I've just finished my University and architecture studies some years ago!
    I'm an architect! I'm working full time as an architect!! So, I think the only way to learn more rendering programs is to sit on my pc and try it!! I can use 3ds max, and made some renderings and animations with it, but they're not so nice as yours!!! I would like to learn Blender now...I only have to find some free time to study it!! Unluckily when you work, you don't have so much free-time to improve your skills!
    Have a nice day!!

  13. Hey Hong, I've just began my blog!
    it's fatinefatine.blogspot.com ...reminds me of hongyihongyi.blogspot lol =P
    it's written in french in order to avoid english mistakes but the photos say a lot of things.
    I'm adding your email right now and I hope to talk to you soon!
    I think I'll write you an email as soon as I finish this little bunch of sketches; i'm sure you can understand :)
    thank you for inspiring me!!!!!

  14. I don't know much about architecture, but I love the concept and idea behind your final project (the artists studio/gallery). Wouldn't it be amazing if more young independent (struggling) artists had a space to work and showcase their talent? Imagine how much more vibrant the dreary world we live in would be! =)

    Oh and your Grasshopper elective looks real intimidating, haha. I can't imagine all the blood sweat and tears that must have gone into the creation of that monster.

    Congrats on making it through uni!

  15. Hi Hong Yi!
    I am so glad that I found your blog a couple of months ago. I am a final year of Interior Architecture & Design student. Just to let you know I printed one of your 3D visuals and showed it to my tutor together along with others that I've found. Hope you don't mind. :E
    Keep posting inspirational stuff! I'll keep watching. :) XOXO

  20. I like your work and style. congrats. The first thing I saw from you was that coffecup portrait on youtoube. I like that very much.
    Your architectural design skills are great too. Btw, the sleepless, worked trough nights will come back, when you work on your first super cool projects. But then again, its more fun because you can see your project grow in real somewhere, and that in reverse creates more sleepless nights......... But its worth it!
